About Parents Education Network

Parents Education Network (PEN) is a coalition of parents collaborating with educators, students and the community to empower and bring academic and life success to students with learning and attention differences.

PEN is a grassroots organization with national impact, founded in 2003 by a group of parents whose children had learning and attention differences, and who individually struggled to find the information, services, and expertise to help their children succeed academically. They did not want other parents to experience the isolation and frustration they encountered. They came to believe strongly that parents and educators must work collaboratively to help children with LD understand their individual strengths.

Beginning in 2009, PEN has held an annual event which has come to be known as "EdRev" -- for "Education Revolution" -- in San Francisco's AT&T Park (Giants Stadium).   EdRev is a unique day for parents, teachers, and students, a day dedicated to understanding each child's individuality in learning as the basis for creating new educational environments.  The event quickly became nationally recognized, and PEN began to receive inquiries about the possibility of its opening affiliate branches in other locations.   Our community is fortunate that PEN chose Phoenix as the location for one of three "pilot" affiliates to launch in 2013.

What PEN believes

  • The child suffers if the parent-school relationship is adversarial instead of collaborative.
  • Understanding learning and attention differences, as experienced in the context of the classroom and the home, is the key to a good partnership between the school, parents and students.
  • Parents can't teach educators; parents must teach other parents, and educators other educators.
  • A strength-based approach at school and home is most effective in helping students reach their full potential.

What PEN wants to achieve

PEN aims to ignite an education revolution across the country that will acknowledge, appreciate and effectively teach all students, including those with learning and attention differences by:
  • Increasing awareness, knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the strengths and challenges facing students with learning and attention differences through education and collaboration of parents, students, teachers and the community.
  • Promoting a strength-based, research-driven approach that benefits all students, in the classroom and at home.
  • Empowering students with learning and attention differences to reach their full potential.
